2022 Nissan Frontier Revealed: Trims, Engine, & New Look

Finally! After many months of speculation and educated guesses, Nissan officially revealed the 2022 Nissan Frontier they’ve been teasing about. Fully redesigned and boasting impressive details, this vehicle will hit the lots soon, and the tough-looking mid-size truck is sure to be a hit with both Nissan loyalists and new converts!

2022 Nissan Frontier Style

Forget gentle curves—this truck conveys a toughness that might remind you of hardbodies that rolled off the line 30 or 40 years ago. The Frontier hasn’t had a redesign since 2005, so the maker didn’t hold back.

A large, centered grille on the huge front end is bookended by interlocking headlights. The rear of the truck is just as eye-catching with bulky fenders with lamps that look like they are attached to the side of the truck.

Exterior colors include:

  • Glacier White
  • Gun Metallic
  • Super Black
  • Red Alert
  • Cardinal Red
  • Metallic TriCoat
  • Deep Blue Pearl
  • Baja Storm
  • Tactical Green Metallic
  • Boulder Grey Pearl

If you’re impressed by the exterior of the 2022 Nissan Frontier, expect that feeling to continue when you examine the interior.

As tough as this truck is on the outside, the interior is surprisingly comfortable. A 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on every trim level.

An incredible amount of storage is available, including 4 liters of space in the center console, 6.5 liters in the door, and additional storage above the instrument—and all of this is easily reached from your Zero Gravity seats that make even long drives comfortable. Did we mention those Zero Gravity seats come standard?

2022 Nissan Frontier Trim Levels

All the trim levels feature the same 3.8-liter V-6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission. All of the exterior colors mentioned above are available on all trim levels.

2022 Nissan Frontier Engine and Performance

The engine in the 2022 Nissan Frontier is the same as it was on the 2020 model. It’s a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 that pushes out 310 HP and 281 lb-ft of torque. The truck also boasts a nine-speed automatic transmission and a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. As for gas mileage, expect to get about 18 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway.

The truck has a towing capacity of 6,720 pounds, which is the same as last year’s model. When it comes to payload, the 2022 Frontier can handle about 150 pounds more than the 2021 model for a total of 1,610 pounds. Available Utili-track makes it easy to secure the loads. When you put the bed to work, have peace of mind that it’s protected by adding the available spray-on bedliner.

2022 Nissan Frontier Tech

Whether you’re driving to the job site, the soccer field, the trails, or taking your truck on a long-haul drive, the onboard tech will help to keep you entertained. The standard 9-inch touch screen is home base, and you’ll find the functionality to be very user-friendly. Several charging outlets, including a USB-C port, ensure your phones and other devices are at the ready.

Add a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless phone charger to the PRO-X and PRO-4X models for even greater connectivity.

The sound system can be updated to a 6-speaker Fender Premium system on the SV, PRO-X, and PRO 4X models.

2022 Nissan Frontier Safety

Safety is important to Nissan, and that point is certainly made clear on the 2022 Frontier redesign. This is the debut of the Nissan Intelligent Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection and Off-Road Mode. This Around View Monitor, which Nissan first brought to market, allows drivers to have a birds-eye view created from images taken from four cameras mounted on the truck’s exterior.

Some of the other impressive safety features you’ll find on the 2022 Nissan Frontier are part of Nissan Safety Shield 360:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • High Beam Assist and class-exclusive Rear Automatic Braking

Nissan is also proud to help keep drivers and passenger safe with other features, including:

  • Standard Intelligent Forward Collision Warning
  • Standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Easy Fill Tire Alert
  • Available Intelligent Cruise Control
  • Available Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Available Intelligent Driver Alertness

Also standard on all models is Rear Door Alert and eight airbags.

Nissan wants their drivers to be safe on the trails as well as on the highway, so Off-Road Mode kicks in when the truck is in low-gear and moving slowly. This feature, which is available on the PRO-4X, helps you maneuver through trails with the need for a spotter.

How Does the 2022 Frontier Stack Up Against the Competition?

The competitors of the 2022 Frontier are the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, and Toyota Tacoma. Of course, each has its strengths, but the revamped Nissan Frontier pulls ahead of the pack in many ways, including the fact that it leads the group in HP and torque while still maintaining very similar fuel economy.

Price won’t be much of a factor when choosing between these as they have starting prices of within $2,000 of each other.

The bold style, power, and updated features help the 2022 Frontier outshine the competition.
